The fruit is named Cape Gooseberry because it was first cultivated in the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa but is in fact native to Peru, and thus the binominal name Physalis peruviana. Also known as Inca berry, you can eat them fresh as a healthy snack, but Cape Gooseberry is also used in fruit-based sauces, pies, puddings, chutneys, jams, ice cream, as well as fresh in salads, fruit salads and as a topping for desserts.
